Current Status and Potential of Biofortification to Enhance Crop Nutritional Quality: An Overview

Around 2 billion people are suffering from chronic malnutrition or “hidden hunger”, which is the result of many diseases and disorders, including cognitive degeneration, stunting growth, mortality. Thus, biofortification staple food crops enriched with micronutrients a more sustainable option for providing nutritional supplements managing in society. Since 2001, when concept came to light, different research activities have been carried out, like development target populations, breeding genetic engineering, release biofortified cultivars, addition conducting efficacy trials delivery plan development. Although, being cost-effective intervention, it still faces challenges, easy accessibility stakeholders’ acceptance, availability germplasm public domain, varies region region. Hence, this review focused on recent potential, efforts made crop biofortification, impacts analysis human health, cost-effectiveness, future perspectives further strengthen programs. Through regular interventions techniques methodologies, holds huge potential solve problem through nutrient-enriched options billions globally.
